Program Description

Event Details

Our October title is Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez. This novel, about a Black nurse in 1973 Alabama who blows the whistle on a terrible injustice done to her patients, is inspired by true historical events.

Civil Townsend intends to make a difference in her African American community while working at the Montgomery Family Planning Clinic. Her first week on the job, Civil is shocked to learn that her new patients are children—just eleven and thirteen years old. When a tragic event occurs, nothing will ever be the same for any of them. Decades later, as Dr. Civil Townsend is ready to retire and leave the past behind, she learns some people and stories refuse to be forgotten. Because history repeats what we don’t remember.

Copies of the book will be available for pickup at the library and on the Palace Project or Libby app.
