Program Description

Event Details

Every four years, BPL likes to host its own "presidential" election with popular characters from youth media and books. In 2016, we had cat characters. In 2020, we voted on dog characters. And now, this Fall, everyone will have a chance to vote on their favorite bird character! Voting will take place all day on November 5th. No registration necessary - just stop by our Atrium location and place your vote. Voters of all ages welcome to participate! Results will be announced in the days following the election.

  • Candidate #1: BIG BIRD. Big Bird is best known for his many years on the PBS program "Sesame Street." He is a bilingual candidate (Spanish/English) who likes to focus on urban living/issues since his home base is in a city. He is a strong advocate for health and fitness - he can personally roller skate, ice skate, dance, swim, sing, write poetry, draw, and ride a unicycle. And in 2000, he was named a living legend by the Library of Congress.
  • Candidate #2: SCUTTLE. Most people know Scuttle from his association with Ariel (The Little Mermaid). He speaks many languages, across species - he can communicate with fish, birds, and humans! He is fascinated with human technology and innovation, claiming to be an expert on many human inventions/products. He also has proven skills in gathering and sharing information, often in support of others in need.
  • Candidate #3: PIGEON. Pigeon is featured in many best-selling books by Mo Willems, and often makes "guest appearances" in Elephant & Piggy books. He is passionate about public transportation and has eagerly offered to fly Air Force One to help save taxpayers money. Pigeons are known to have strong problem-solving skills and can think several steps ahead. While it can be difficult to take constructive feedback from others, Pigeon ultimately listens to his advisors and does the right thing.
  • Candidate #4: SKIPPER. Skipper is an immigrant from Antarctica but considers himself a New Yorker, having spent many years living in the New York Central Park Zoo. Literacy is very important to him - he has publicly acknowledged that he struggles with reading. He is a great strategist with a proven record of working with and leading teams. Skipper also possesses the courage and bold, boisterous personality of an adelie penguin - there is no competitor or situation too difficult for him to challenge.
