Program Description

Event Details

Bloomfield Public Library and Wintonbury Historical Society are collaborating to present a presentation by Rick Cochran.  He is the author of True to his Country: A Civil War Novel will speak about how he learned more about the Civil War, his great-grandparents and Bloomfield, Connecticut through letters his great grand parents exchanged while his grandmother remained working on the Filley Farm and his grandfather fought the war in the South.

In this program Rick will explain how he became interested in this story through his Great-grandfather’s Civil War letters and then how he came to Bloomfield to learn more about both great-grandparents as well as the Filley family.  There was a great chain of good fortune and serendipity that helped him to uncover important facts in Bloomfield and beyond. He spoke with a volunteer at the Wintonbury Historical Society, and she helped him to talk with Fred Hesketh, then Bloomfield’s esteemed Town Historian. Moreover, Rick talked and corresponded at length with Caroline Filley Archer, author of Julia and Mr. Kwong: A story of Mutual Acceptance in the 19th Century

Cochran, a retired teacher, is a great storyteller. You are bound to enjoy this evening that helps to bring the tragedy of the American Civil War and Bloomfield History to life.
