Program Description

Event Details

How can we combat the epidemic of loneliness in our society by building community in our neighborhoods and towns? Author and activist Susan Carey attempts to answer this question and many more in her newly published book More Than Merely Eyes Can See. By conducting interviews with attendees of a weekly Friday dinner at Grace Lutheran Church in Hartford, Carey attempts to capture not only the lives of our Hartford neighbors, but remains committed to a dignified and honest portrayal devoid of stereotypes and focused on what we all need to belong: trust, empathy, and unconditional love.

Susan Carey relocated to Hartford, Connecticut, eager to embrace city living and a vibrant multicultural community. She explored its neighborhoods on foot, absorbing their history, cuisine, and music. But it was at her church’s weekly community supper where she came to know her neighbors.
