Program Description

Event Details

Did you know that January is National Poverty in America Awareness Month? To promote awareness about this topic close to home, we will discuss More Than Merely Eyes Can See by Susan Carey, a Hartford resident, who will be in attendance to share insights and answer questions. BPL has purchased copies of the book for you to keep, which will be available for pickup at the Atrium.

More Than Merely Eyes Can See weaves together the stories of a small church in Hartford, CT—mostly comprised of middle-class suburban members—and its inner-city neighbors. In 2011, the congregation launched the Friday Gathering and invited members and neighbors to dine together each week. In the book, more than forty diners share stories about their lives with grace, humor, and occasionally brutal honesty. More Than Merely Eyes Can See offers readers diverse perspectives on racial identity, the shortcomings of charity, opportunities to repair inequitable systems, and the transformative power of relationships.  You may find it helpful to watch Sue's author talk, How to Build Community, before attending the program.

Please join us for Ending Homelessness in CT on January 29, the day after this program. Journey Home is mentioned in the book.
