Event Details
Whether in the form of books, television, films, or podcasts, there is no denying that many Americans are fascinated by true crime stories. But why has this genre become such a cultural phenomenon? Have we simply become spectators of the macabre, or do these retellings prevent future crimes from happening? True crime expert and author M. William Phelps will lead us on a journey into the world of true crime, sharing stories and discussing the lasting impact of these crimes and their publicity.
A true crime expert/analyst, creator/executive producer/writer, and investigative journalist, M. William Phelps is the best-selling author of 39 nonfiction books and winner of the Excellence in (Investigative) Journalism Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, and the New England Book Festival Award. He has also written for numerous publications including the Providence Journal, Connecticut Magazine, and Hartford Courant. A well-known national expert on serial killers, Phelps is a consultant for television shows and is a constant presence on crime film sets. Phelps has spent his career devoted to victims’ rights and how a psychopath’s behavior affects the family, the community, and the individual.
“We cannot just create murder dramas and nonfiction crime TV any way we want to. We need to take responsibility for how we portray killers and, especially, their victims in fiction and nonfiction. It is imperative to our collective understanding with regards to how to better protect ourselves against violence.” - M. William Phelps
