Event Details
Beethoven is best known as a great composer of instrumental music (9 symphonies, 7 concerti, 16 string quartets and 32 piano sonatas among his oeuvre). He did write some vocal music (including 79 songs), but only a single opera which became a major source of frustration for him during and after its completion. “Fidelio” took 10 years, 3 different versions and 3 librettists before it became the opera we know today. Jeffrey Engel will discuss the complicated creation of Beethoven’s sole operatic work and play excerpts from it.
